Natural History of Atrial septal defect
- [Qp/Qs] > 2.0/1.0 – Large true secundum ASDs – Managed in childhood by surgical or device closure
- Qp/Qs > 1.5/1.0 – If remain as undetected ASD – presents as Effort angina
- Effort angina – 30% of patients present by the third decade and more than 75% of patients present by the fifth decade
- Supraventricular arrhythmias (atrial fibrillation or flutter)
- Right-sided heart failure – develop by 40 years of age
- Paradoxical embolism -TIA
[Qp/Qs] = Pulmonary artery blood flow relative to systemic blood flow
